SPE is regarded as a key technology for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), also known as Industry 4.0. The areas of application are extremely diverse and range from mechanical and plant engineering to process technology and building infrastructure. There are numerous advantages compared to four-pair cabling systems, as the cable diameters are smaller and remote powering (Power over Data Line - PoDL) is still guaranteed.
As the name suggests, SPE technology uses only one pair of conductors, which saves space and weight and allows a significantly higher packing density. Despite this reduction, a power supply of up to 60 W is possible for the terminal devices (PoDL). At the same time, longer transmission distances of up to 1,000 m at transmission rates of 10 Mbit/s can be realised. In terms of transmission speed, no compromises have to be made compared to traditional Ethernet (up to 10 Gbit/s).
Handling is just as easy as with conventional cabling systems. With the help of adapters, it should even be possible to continue using existing cabling infrastructures. This advantage is particularly significant in the area of building infrastructure.
In order to enable a broad and fast implementation, the SPE System Alliance will support a uniform standardisation. To this end, the intensive and permanent exchange of specialists from different industries and application areas will be promoted. EFB-Elektronik, as an expert for network technology and industrial system solutions, will actively participate in these processes to further advance SPE technology.
