Buy RJ45 & other network connectors online at EFB-Elektronik

RJ45 plugs are fundamental to connecting network devices like computers, switches, and routers. Their distinctive rectangular design with eight pins ensures efficient data transmission. Alongside RJ45, our online shop offers other RJ connectors, such as RJ10, RJ11, RJ12, and DEC, each designed for specific applications. Depending on your requirements, choose from various RJ45 types and accessories that cater to different levels of speed, shielding, and installation complexity.

Network Connectors Overview: RJ10, RJ11, RJ12, DEC & RJ45

The RJ45 connector is the industry standard for Ethernet networks. Featuring eight pins and supporting data rates up to 10 Gbit/s (depending on the category), RJ45 is widely used in home, office, and industrial environments to ensure stable and high-speed data transmission. In addition to RJ45, other connectors serve specialised needs:
  • RJ10: Compact and used for telephone handsets, RJ10 connectors have four pins, ensuring reliable voice signal transmission.
  • RJ11: Commonly found in analog telephone connections, RJ11 has four or six pins, typically used for voice transmission in landline phones or DSL installations.
  • RJ12: Similar to RJ11 but with six assignable pins, RJ12 provides enhanced functionality, supporting multiple telephone lines.
  • DEC: These connectors, developed by Digital Equipment Corporation, are mainly used in specialised or older network systems. Though robust, DEC connectors are increasingly replaced by RJ45 in modern setups.

Cat.6, Cat.7 & Cat.8 Connectors: Understanding the Different Categories

The performance and maximum supported data rate of the RJ45 connectors is specified in categories. In the EFB-Elektronik online shop you can purchase RJ45 plugs in the categories Cat.5E, Cat.6, Cat.6A and Cat.8 Class 1.
  • Cat.5E: Category 5 (Enhanced) supports data rates up to 2,5 Gbit/s over 100 metres, ideal for smaller networks.
  • Cat.6: Cat.6 connectors offer better performance than Cat.5E and support up to 5 Gbit/s for cable lengths of up to 100 metres, suitable for home and mid-sized networks. The improved shielding minimises interference and ensures a reliable connection.
  • Cat.6A: Category 6 Augmented is a further development of Cat.6. With better shielding, this category is particularly suitable for office environments where many cables run in parallel and electromagnetic interference needs to be reduced.
  • Cat.7: Originally designed to support higher data rates with superior shielding, Cat.7 allowed for transmission speeds of up to 40 Gbit/s over short distances using GG45 and ARJ45 connectors. However, due to a lack of market acceptance, these connectors—and consequently this standard—did not gain widespread adoption.
  • Cat.8.1: Category 8 Class 1 is the latest development in the field of copper cabling. Designed for data centres, Cat.8.1 supports data rates up to 40 Gbit/s over 30 metres, with excellent shielding to minimise electromagnetic interference.

Shielded, unshielded & field attachable RJ45 connectors

Shielded RJ45 plugs (Shielded Twisted Pair, STP) offer better protection against electromagnetic interference and are preferred in environments with a high interference potential. Unshielded plugs (Unshielded Twisted Pair, UTP), on the other hand, are sufficient for less interference-prone areas of application, such as simple home networks.
Field-attachable connectors offer flexibility for quick RJ45 assembly without specialised tools, allowing for easy installation and repair of network cables. Field Termination RJ45 plugs should be a staple in every installer's toolkit, especially when assembling Cat.6 or higher connectors:
  • Die-cast zinc housing with dust protection cap
  • 360° shield contact for optimal EMC shielding
  • Optional IP68 compatibility for harsh environments
  • Available in shielded and unshielded versions

Crimping RJ45 plugs: pin assignment & wire connection

In addition to field-attachable network plugs, EFB-Elektronik also offers classic RJ45 plugs for crimping with a crimping tool. During crimping, the eight cable wires are securely connected to their respective contacts using a crimping tool, ensuring a reliable and durable connection.

Steps for crimping an RJ45 plug:
  1. Strip the cable: Remove 2-3 cm of the outer insulation of the network cable to expose the eight coloured wires.
  2. Organise the wires:Arrange the cores in the correct order according to the selected standard (T568A or T568B).
  3. Shorten the wires:Cut the wires to a uniform length.
  4. Insert into the plug:Insert the wires into the RJ45 plug, ensuring that each wire slides into the corresponding contact.
  5. Crimping:Place the plug in the crimping tool and press the tool to press the contacts onto the wires and make the connection.
A well-crimped RJ45 plug ensures optimum signal transmission and minimises the risk of connection problems.
The correct wire assignment is crucial for the functionality of an Ethernet connection with RJ45 plugs. There are two common standards for wire assignment: T568A and T568B. Both standards define the sequence of the eight wires in the connector and ensure that data transmission functions reliably.
  • T568A: This standard is more commonly found in residential installations. The wire pairs are assigned in such a way that maximum compatibility with older telephone installations is guaranteed.
  • T568B: The T568B standard is more common and is often used in commercial installations. It offers the same functionality as T568A, but in a different wire sequence.
It is important that both ends of a cable use the same standard to ensure a working network connection. A combination of T568A and T568B at the ends of a cable results in a so-called crossover cable, which can be used for special connections, such as the direct connection of two computers.
