What kind of network cables are available?

Our range at a glance

Copper network cables are the standard for internet cables, also known as LAN cables or Ethernet cables. Patch cables are Ethernet cables with RJ45 plugs that serve as connecting cables between, for example, a computer and a network connection or between a switch and a router. They are available in the online store in many different lengths from 0.15 m to 90 m. In addition to pre-assembled network cables with connectors, EFB-Elektronik also offers a large selection of cables by the meter and installation cables in various categories.

What is the maximum length of a network cable?

The ideal length of a network cable depends on various factors, such as the network speed, the quality of the cable and the specific application. Here are some general guidelines and considerations for the optimal length of a network cable.
Maximum cable length for different categories: There are recommended maximum lengths for the most common copper network cables to ensure optimal performance.
Cat.5e and Cat.6: These two categories support cable lengths of up to 100 m per network segment. If this length is exceeded, the respective maximum transmission speed is no longer achieved.
Cat.6A: Up to 100m at a speed of 10 Gbps. This also applies to professional networks where higher speeds are required.
Cat.7 and Cat.8: These cable types are suitable for high-speed applications. Cat.7 can also support up to 100 m for 10 Gbps, while Cat.8 is only suitable for up to 30 m for 40 Gbps.

Distances in home networks: In home networks, a cable between 0.5 and 20 m is usually sufficient, depending on where your devices are located.
  • Short network cables (0.5 to 5 m) for connections between two devices on the same desk or in the immediate vicinity
  • Medium network cables (5 to 20 m) for connections between devices in different rooms
  • Long network cables (over 20 m) for connections across several floors
Professional networks: In professional networks, cables of up to 100 m in length are often used to connect workstations or servers. Cat.6A or higher categories are often used here to ensure high transmission rates even over longer distances.
For very long connections (over 100 m) or environments with high data requirements, the use of  fiber optic cables may be a better option.
